"I Built a Road Which Had No Purpose"

I have been working towards an exhibition (now postponed during the corona crisis)  of mainly drawings, 3D work, a book launch, film, and short performance based on Geelong’s iconic Ford factory site. However during the crisis lockdown I have become intrigued by the new types of symbolic and physical space technology has produced. Noticing the difference between on screen users and  learners, I'm interested in how easy it is to use a screen, and the moment when this powerful medium takes and holds our attention. After prolonged screen use, we experience our tactile environment differently. A screen’s relative lack of tactile surface gives new tasks to the structure of our eye; we also experience time differently.  

The drawings are titled “Carbon Monoxide Scape Apple HQ Federation Square, Melbourne”. They are derived from a screenshot of the proposed Apple HQ to be situated in Melbourne’s social and recreational centre. This Apple HQ will change Federation Square much as a screen changes a room, producing its own unique view of the world. 

The new show imagines the world physically changed by our use of screens, and investigates our perception and relationship to physical space as it is reshaped and remade by these forces.
