Briony Barr is a visual-conceptual artist whose work explores emergence and pattern-formation through a combination of rule-based drawing, participatory installation, scientific methodology and interdisciplinary collaboration.

She collaborates with scientists on two ongoing, art-science projects. In ‘Drawing on Complexity’ (with physicist Andrew Melatos), she designs large-scale, rule-based, drawing-experiments which model the evolution of complex systems through group dynamics. As part of Scale Free Network: art-science collaborative and publisher (co-founded with microbial-ecologist Gregory Crocetti), she creates a range of interdisciplinary projects which incorporate drawing as a tool for seeing, and artistic process more broadly as a means of engaging with the ‘invisible’ world of the microscopic. Most recently, Briony has been developing a new body of work, drawing in response to sound, particularly improvised music.

Briony earned her BA (English) from The University of Queensland, BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and MFA from the Victorian College of Arts in Melbourne, Australia. She has exhibited in solo and group shows in Australia, Mexico, America and South Korea and is an honorary fellow of The University of Melbourne’s School of Physics.
