Organisation/Company

Name: continuum. Theatre Company

My Role: Actor/Producer

continuum. Theatre Company was formed in 2023, and debuted it's first work 'Where The Water Lies' at the 2023 New Zealand Fringe Festival in Wellington.

Rohe

I was born, raised, and schooled in Te Whanganui-a-tara; and eventually stayed on in the city to complete my university undergraduate degree at Te Herenga Waka. After two years overseas in the U.K, I returned to Wellington (in 2020), and it is now home, once more.

How I got where I am today

After finishing secondary school in 2013, I studied my Bachelor of Arts at Te Herenga Waka- majoring in Theatre and History. I graduated in 2016, and quickly decided to pursue further acting training overseas- eventually moving to the United Kingdom in 2018, where I auditioned for multiple M.A drama school programmes, and ultimately accepted a place in Bristol Old Vic Theatre School's 'Master of Acting' course.

After the fifty week intensive course at BOVTS (September 2018 - September 2019), I moved to London, and was in the early stages of establishing my acting career when the COVID-19 pandemic set in, and ultimately relocated me back to Wellington.

Over the last three years I have been re-establishing myself as an actor domestically- working across Theatre, Television, and Film- represented by Gail Cowan Management in Auckland.

Since 2021 I have begun to diversify my creative skillset more and more, taking on work in roles other than acting- including Producing, Directing, Podcasting, Voice Acting, and Marketing.

Whānau

My parents are my greatest supporters, and facilitators of my working in the arts. If not for their constant assistance over the last ten years, I wouldn't be working in the creative industries at all. I am also supported greatly by my partner Francesca, who provides the solid foundation to everything home life!

What grounds me?

A combination of cooking, coffee, music, and spending time with great people, who revitalise my drive to be creative.

Synopsis

'Where The Water Lies' is an extended monologue that reflects on time, place, and the ripple effects of circumstance. Inspired by real events, the story serves as a powerful reminder that at any moment, anything can happen.

"“Moments hang… like pictures in the gallery of memory...how do you quantify serendipity? 1 in 43 quintillion?"

After two years of development, this work- the playwriting debut from James Ladanyi- premiered at the 2023 New Zealand Fringe Festival, supported by the brilliant creative team of James Cain, Nino Raphael, & Aimée Sullivan. The production was staged at MEANWHILE Gallery.

Reviews and Quotes

"Ladanyi is a great performer. He is wistful and considered, of course, but he is also funny and charming, and his moments of intense quiet are cycled with bursts of equally intense energy.

This is the kind of show that has you musing over the sum of moments that has brought you to the room, and to tell you the truth: it has my heart…

If you’re after something intimate and reflective in the midst of the chaos that is Fringe, then this is the show for you."

~ Art Murmurs

"A personal but relatable story about moments when life decides to happen to us…

It is Ladanyi’s energy and connection with the audience that really suck us in. At times he is infectious and dynamic, and at others wistful and nostalgic, balancing changing between these emotions skilfully."

~ Wellington Regional News

"a lengthy, poetic and highly reflective piece on the theme of serendipity...a quality production"
