Karla is a Yugambeh woman, currently completing a Master of Criminology. Karla’s Kungullanji research rests of the notion that gender is not monolithic rather it is shaped by indigeneity, class, sexuality, and other social locations. Pursuing equality praxis as incongruous with sameness, Karla searches for solutions to the over-incarceration of marginalised women and girls. Underpinning this exploration is extensive experience working with women and children who have experienced gendered violence, intergenerational trauma, and structural disadvantage. Karla’s attention to gender-based violence sparked when she completed a Graduate Certificate, Domestic Violence. Prior to that Karla specialized in mental health with a focus on the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people. Presenting at conferences including the Asia Pacific Regional Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect (APCCAN) and co-authoring in the Australian e-Journal of Mental health (AeJAMH) have been among Karla’s contributions to the evidence base. Karla hopes her work will promote greater justice for women and girls at the margins by giving voice and visibility to their experiences framed by a vision of reform.
