Laura at Hickorys

Melbourne-based writer Laura Fulton was born in the Mississippi delta region of Arkansas and is now a naturalised dual citizen of both Australia and the US. Her 2020 PhD, completed through RMIT, explores how the adopted person may address issues of identity, origin and belonging through creative writing experimentation. Her creative and critical work has appeared in a variety of publications including Swamp Writing, TEXT, Qualitative Inquiry, Antithesis, The Watershed Review, The Incompleteness Book I and II (Recent Works Press 2020 & 2021) and ACE III: Arresting contemporary stories by emerging writers (Recent Works Press 2022). Her current novel is an imagined family history defined by secrets, lies, longing and loss, a patchwork of strong female voices that considers agency, empowerment and how stories and the telling of them can sometimes save our lives. Laura's interests include travel, watching stand-up comedy and live theatre, reading, writing and walking her little dog. Her work often considers themes of hope, strength, resilience, beauty within the mundane and the triumph of tiny heroes.
