Michelle Vine is an emerging Australian artist and researcher working across art, science and culture. Among her current works is a long-term research project on German naturalist Amalie Dietrich, and the botanical, zoological and ethnographic specimens from Queensland that Dietrich collected in the 1860s, which remain today in museums worldwide. To become fully immersed in this historical narrative, Vine trained herself as an amateur naturalist and retraced Dietrich’s field work in North and Central Queensland; she collected plant and insect specimens, as well as human-made objects, for both scientific research and artistic works, which take the forms of multi-sensory installations, photography, and digital writing.

In 2019 Vine graduated from Griffith University (QCA) with her Bachelor of Fine Art (First Class Honours) and the university medal for Fine Art. Her work on Dietrich was exhibited at the Queensland Museum for World Science Festival in 2017 and won the 2018 National Libris Award for Altered Books. Recent career highlights include ‘Contested Biography’ at Artspace Mackay (April-Sept 2020, solo), ‘Hatched 2020’ the National graduate exhibition at PICA (July-October 2020), ‘Touch and Tactility in Art’, Kemper Art Museum, Washington University in St Louis (Feb 2020), and Museum of Brisbane’s Artist@Home residency.
