Ross McCormack graduated from the New Zealand School of Dance in 2001. Douglas Wright Dance Company 2002 Australian Dance Theatre 2003/5. 2004 Awarded Best Male Dancer Helpmann Award for Held. 2005 to 2015 and still touring presently Out OF Context a work in Homage to Pina Bausch Ross has been working with Alain Platel at Les Ballets C de la B in Belgium. In 2011 Ross joined up with Australia’s Chunky Move . 2012 Ross joined up with Melbourne dance company Lucy Guerin.
Ross has been commissioned to choreograph several short works for New Zealand universities and companies: (sex), 2012 and Stealth, 2009 for Footnote Dance; Preface: Homage to a Risk, 2015, Visions of Salome, 2015, SUM, 2011 and Symbiotic, 2008 for New Zealand School of Dance; Nga hau e wha: Papa Nuku, 2011 for Okareka Dance Company; Area, 2015, and Rahui, 2012 for Unitec; and Matter, 2016 for New Zealand Dance Company Area Squared Unitec. In 2009 for Dance North Australia Ross created Nowhere Fast, which toured to the Macau Cultural Centre, China in September 2010. For the same company he has created. [SIC], 2011. If Form Was Shifted as part of a double-bill programme with Australian choreographer, Stephanie Lake, which toured in Australia 2016.
In 2014 Ross co-founded New Zealand dance theatre company Muscle Mouth, where he is Artistic Director. AGE, the company’s inaugural show, which was commissioned and presented by the New Zealand Festival.
Muscle Mouth premiered Triumphs and Other Alternatives in 2015. Triumphs and Other Alternatives toured NZ, was presented at the Australian Performing Arts Market, and at the 2017 Seoul International Dance Festival.
Muscle Mouth premiered The Weight of Force, at the 2016 Hong Kong Arts Festival. The work then toured to the 2016 M1 Contact Contemporary Dance Festival, Singapore.
2017 Muscle Mouth undertook its first international collaboration, presenting Area² as part of Borderline, a new double-bill season that premiered in Singapore with T.H.E Dance Company. Muscle Mouth premiered System at Tempo Dance Festival in 2018.
2015, Muscle Mouth presented installations Tiger and Another Garden at Enjoy Public Art Gallery in 2015. Ross has also designed all of the sets for his works. 2015 Ross was awarded the prestigious Creative New Zealand Choreographic Fellowship.
2017 also saw Ross named a New Zealand Arts Foundation Laureate. In 2017 Ross joined Auckland Theatre Company, playing Mozart in their sell out season of Amadeus.
2019 Ross was commissioned through the Auckland Arts Festival to As It Stands to premier at the ASB Waterfront.2019 Ross was commissioned by Footnote Dance Company to create The Clearing.
In 2019 with H2Q Arts Dance Company Vietnam, Ross was commissioned to create Methods in Saigon, a collaboration with composer Jason Wright and traditional musicians form Dak Nong province, 6 diverse dancers from within Vietnam Ross created Method which premiered at the Saigon Military Theatre. www.musclemouth.co.nz
