Working across kinetic sculpture, installation, video, photography, virtual reality and performance, Tully Arnot’s practice explores the effect that contemporary technology has on human relationships, looking at the isolating nature of our increasingly connected, but ultimately disconnected world.
Themes of automation and simulation feature strongly in Arnot’s work, often looking at robotic and non- sentient substitutes for humans and human interactions. The surface of the human body, and notions of touch are analysed through the mediating effects of social media, HD digital information and haptic technologies – often exploring this through consumer level devices.
Arnot has also focussed on the emergent field of plant robotics and cognition, and how technology mediates our relationship with the natural world. Arnot’s work investigates the tensions between the organic and digital spheres, and the blurring boundaries as symbiotic relationships develop between these worlds.
