Event Session - Noongar Place Names

Live Stream / Recording

Day 1 - Friday 6th, 10:00am - 11:00am AWST

The Change Makers

There are more Aboriginal place names in South Western Australia than any other cultural block in the country – proof of the passive, but powerful resistance of the Noongar people.

With less than 400 fluent Noongar speakers left, decoding these place names is not only critical, it is the responsibility of a nation that has tried to erase its first nation culture and history.

In this interactive session, Len Collard will share his life work in Place Names and demonstrate how his collaboration with Community Arts Network is helping communities to reclaim their birthright – language.

We would like to acknowledge the Aboriginal people of the Bibbulmun nation as the traditional custodians of the lands on which we work and live. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and honour all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as the first people of this nation.
