Internationally awarded author Laura Jean McKay will be discussing the crafting and the impact of talking animals in fiction and what she's working on next.

Laura Jean McKay is the author ofThe Animals in That Country (Scribe 2020), which won The Clarke Award, the Victorian Prize for Literature, Australian Book Industry Award for Small Publisher's Adult Book of the Year, and an Aurealis Award for best science fiction novel (co-win with Corey J White for Repo Virtual). It was shortlisted for the ALS Gold Medal, the Readings Prize for New Australian Fiction, and the Stella Prize and longlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award. Laura is also the author of Holiday in Cambodia (Black Inc., 2013) and has a PhD in Creative Writing with a focus on Literary Animal Studies from The University of Melbourne. She is a Lecturer in Creative Writing at Massey University, Aotearoa, where she teaches and supervises in prose and poetry, including eco-fiction and -nonfiction. Laura’s current research encompasses extinction narratives and animal stories.
